In a world under threat from climate change, our forests and woodlands have the potential to offer a lot more than just a pleasant place to take walks. As well as being a 'carbon store', they obviously provide a 'carbon-lean' wood fuel. The renewable life cycle of the carbon contained within the woodland along with its usage as a biodegradable building material is today overlooked in our gas fired central heated homes made of concrete and steel.

A recently published document on forestry and woodland entitled Seeing the Wood for Trees highlighted the usage of forests as a tool to be used by carbon traders, noted the available 1.1 million hectares of available forest, and also pointed out 81% of this is in private ownership - most of it un-managed by foresters. There is mounting pressure on the government to take forestry more seriously, as currently most forests across the UK are in need of thinning while the government is promoting steps to curb any deforestation.

The good news however for current consumers is right now the price of a cubic meter of seasoned firewood logs has fallen by 40 per cent since 1989, making firewood logs a cost effective method of heating the home.
